Look carefully! Can you see two semi-circular, clear grey, long-tailed things with stumpy little legs in the middle of the picture? These are demodex mites as they appear under a microscope. Demodex mites are a normal inhabitant of hair follicles for pets. They may look unpleasant but the immune system keeps their numbers in check so they don't usually cause the pet any harm. Occasionally, the immune system fails to control their numbers and hair loss and hair follicle infections is the result. This condition is known as demodectic mange or demodicosis. This picture is what a skin scraping from a case of demodectic mange looks like under the microscope.
