This demodex mite photo is taken through the lens of a microscope. ( the single cigar-shaped figure ) The mite has been scraped from skin from a puppy. Demodex is often referred to as the "puppy mite" and usually is of little concern. Irregularities in the immune system can trigger concerns with this mite when it can cause minor or major hairloss, very itchy skin and other dermatological concerns. The typical hairloss is around the eyes and on the muzzle although it can occur on other parts of the body. Adult dogs can have problems with this mite as well.
